Reconciliation as interdependence

On October 25, 2023, Dr. Fanie du Toit led a discussion around "Reconciliation as Interdependence," sharing groundbreaking research in Peaceworks Report No. 192 entitled "Coordinates for Transformative Reconciliation" commissioned by the United States Institute of Peace’s Inclusive Peace Processes and Reconciliation.

Negotiating with the Terrorist

On the morning of May 2, 2023, the Mary Hoch Center for Reconciliation (MHCR) hosted a webinar titled, Negotiating with the Terrorist: Lessons Learned from Mediation Attempts with al-Shabaab. MHCR Director Antti Pentikäinen moderated the event, and the panelists were individuals he had previously worked alongside during high-stakes negotiations in Somalia.

New Frontiers in the wellbeing of reconciliation practitioners

On Monday, March 27th, 2023 at 9 AM ET, the Mary Hoch Center for Reconciliation (MHCR) hosted a webinar during the Spring 2023 Carter School Peace Week event titled, “New Frontiers on the Wellbeing of Reconciliation Practitioners'' with guest panelists, Giselle Ali and Wendpoulemde André Koala from the Sant’Egidio Foundation for Peace and Dialogue (SFPD).

Learning from latin america: transitional justice successes

On March 7th, MHCR hosted this online discussion with two experts in the Latin American transitional justice process, Dr. Jo-Marie Burt and Eduardo Gonzalez Cueva, to answer those questions and more by bringing together practitioners to talk about their reflections on the successes and shortcomings of these processes and why they are important.

A New Realm of Peacebuilding

On September 20th, MHCR collaborated with the Parachute People, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit which creates community through play to empower personal wellbeing to host a webinar titled A New Realm of Peacebuilding: Exploring the Intersection of Community, Play, Wellbeing and Resilience which discussed ways to implement play into peacebuilding and reconciliation work during the Fall 2022 Carter School Peace Week.

Who are insider reconcilers?

On Friday, April 8th, MHCR staff and employees facilitated a roundtable discussion titled Who are Insider Reconcilers? Binding the Theory and Practice of Reconcilers Operating in their Own Communities at the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution Spring 2022 Peace Week to highlight our Insider Reconciler study.

Integrating Peacebuilding with local wisdom and practices

On February 23rd, MHCR held the second event of the “Healing Across Cultures: Localizing Peacebuilding” webinar series titled ‘Healing Across Cultures: Integrating Peacebuilding with Local Wisdom and Practices’ in collaboration with our partner organization Think Peace Learning and Support Hub. This event brought together indigenous peacebuilders in a discussion centered around healing and how we can expand our current definition of healing based around indigenous wisdom and practices.

Identifying the needs of local peacebuilders

On November 17th, MHCR held the first event of the “Healing Divides from Within: Localizing Peacebuilding” webinar series titled “Peacebuilding at Home: Identifying the Needs of Local Peacebuilders. This event helped answer the questions: What do local peacebuilders need to help transform their communities and promote healing and reconciliation? What can we learn from evidence-based data related to wellness, psychosocial, mental health, and trauma support?

Knowing us, knowing them

On May 19th MHCR held the last event in our Spring Webinar Series “Knowing Us, Knowing Them” in collaboration with Beyond Conflict. This event explored how neuroscience impacts group dynamics and truth, reconciliation, and peace processes as well as the role of threat and empathy in understanding some of the breakdowns between individuals and communities.

Indigenous Truth and Reconciliation commissions

On April 21st, the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in collaboration with MHCR, organized an event to discuss and highlight international Indigenous truth and reconciliation commissions.

The role of apology, repentance, and forgiveness

On April 14th, MHCR held the third event in our Spring Webinar series "The Role of Apology, Repentance, and Forgiveness in Social Transformation" along with Religions for Peace. The goal of this event was to act as a learning exchange among experts on the roles of apologies, repentance, and forgiveness in social change movements and transitional justice processes.

Understanding the role of trauma in truth, reconciliation and peacebuilding processes

Following the positive reception of our first event, MHCR held the second event in our webinar series on March 17th titled Understanding the Role of Trauma in Truth, Reconciliation, and Peacebuilding Processes which allowed us to hear from world-renowned trauma experts as they explored the impact and embodiment of trauma at the individual and collective levels within our society

The first event in the MHCR Webinar Series was titled Bridging Societal Divides and brought together scholars and practitioners to engage in dialogue about how we heal societal divisions and foster social transformation

Learning from experience

On December 10th, 2020 the Mary Hoch Center for Reconciliation hosted the event “Learning from Experience: Truth & Reconciliation Processes in the US” highlighting past truth commissions in the US. The webinar featured speakers from four previous Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) experiences: the Greensboro, North Carolina the Maine-Wabanaki TRC, the Truth-Telling Project, originally from Ferguson MO, and the North Carolina Commission of Inquiry on Torture.

- current psychosocial needs among local peacebuilders
- current challenges among peacebuilding organizations and networks to provide psychosocial support during Covid-19
- opportunities to provide further support
