Peace Week at the Carter School

On March 23rd, MHCR Director Antti Pentikainen and MHCR Distinguished Research Affiliate,Dr. Fanie du Toit will be participating in the Carter School’s Spring 2021 Peace Week. The theme of this year’s Peace Week is peace and anti-racism in the US and around the world and will serve as an opportunity to bring together the Carter School community to engage in dialogue on how we can foster an anti-racism approach in conflict resolution practice and scholarship while highlighting these efforts both domestically and globally.

The Carter School held their inaugural Peace Week during the Fall 2020 semester amidst the pandemic to celebrate the official name change and to bring together the Carter School community to engage in dialogue regarding peace, conflict resolution, and justice. The Spring 2021 Peace Week will continue these conversations focusing on how we can change our society into one that is more equitable, just and inclusive for everyone. The Carter School has arranged a week of substantive events that will provide us with important knowledge and perspectives on movements for racial justice and an anti-racism approach to conflict resolution work.

Director Pentikainen and Dr. Fanie du Toit will be speaking in the roundtable event, “Dilemmas of Reconciliation and Justice” on Tuesday March 23rd from 10:00-11:30 AM.  This roundtable will focus on reconciliation efforts in societies divided by racial and ethnic inequalities as well as provide insight into how these two concepts intersect with each other. The roundtable will give participants a chance to hear from speakers who have experience with the long and arduous process of transitional justice and reconciliation, both domestically and globally. The purpose of the event is to envision what reconciliation can look like through the advancement of theory and practice to attain racial equity.

This event will be facilitated by Carter School Professor Dr. Karina Korostelina and will feature:

  • Antti Pentikainen, Director of the Mary Hoch Center for Reconciliation

  • Dr. Fanie du Toit, MHCR Research Affiliate and Senior Advisor at the Institute of Justice and Reconciliation in South Africa
