On June 4th, 2020, Congresswoman Barbara Lee introduced H.Con.Res.100 to the house to create a US Commission on Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation. The purpose of the US TRHT is “to properly acknowledge, memorialize, and be a catalyst for progress toward jettisoning the belief in a hierarchy of human value, embracing our common humanity, and permanently eliminating persistent racial inequities.” The movement has gained immense support since its inception and there are now over 170 members who support the bill with numbers steadily increasing.
On December 3rd, 2020 Senator Cory Booker will introduce a Senate Resolution calling for a U.S Commission for National TRHT in coordination with H.Con.Res.100 initiated by Congresswoman Barbara Lee.
MHCR has played a pivotal role in helping the bill gain support from our involvement in #TruthWeek to serving on the leadership team for a National Movement for the TRHT. #TruthWeek was part of a larger effort to promote this important bill which could lead to much-needed transformation in our country.
The Leadership Team of the National Movement for a TRHT has been comprised of MHCR and Carter School staff as well. Dr. Charles Chavis, Founding Director of the John Mitchell Jr. Program for History, Justice, and Race serves as a Co-Chair on the TRHT Leadership Team. Antti Pentikainen, the Founding Director of MHCR serves as the Secretary for the Leadership Team and Dr. Corey Henderson, a research affiliate with the John Mitchell Jr. Program serves as a Senior Advisor on the Leadership Team.
The objectives of the TRHT are to develop an agenda to support racial healing and build up the National Movement, establish national Archives for Racial and Cultural Healing (ARCHs) support, and build the Incubation, Research and International Support (IRIS) for all TRHT commissions. The movement surrounding this bill is so important for the healing of our country and we are so glad to have members of the MHCR team playing such a pivotal role in bringing it to fruition.
